A Paraphrase of Psalm 17 with Hymn Tunes

Paraphrase of Psalm 17

8.6.8.6D

Psalm 17:1-3

O hear my cause, attend me Lord

My prayer hides no deceit

And let Your righteous sentence come

Now from Your judgment seat

Your eyes behold,  You try my heart

And visit me at night

I’ve purposed I will not transgress

but do right in your sight

Psalm 17:4-6

These works of men, their sordid steps

The things they have destroyed

By gracious words from Your own lips

Their ways I now avoid

I will not turn to violence

but to Your steadfast ways

I call upon You, O my God

protect me all my days

Psalm 17:7

O Savior in Your steadfast love

A shelter we can seek

For mercies at Your own right hand

for Christ, our Lord, is meek

He intercedes before Your throne

His blood atoned for me

And rising and exalted there

reigns over enemies

Psalm 17:8-12

Within the shadow of Your wings

before Your tender eye

Hide me from wicked violence,

my enemies draw nigh

For they refuse to pity me

they speak with arrogance

And they surround my feeble steps

like lions when they pant

Psalm 17:13-15

Arise, O Lord, deliver me

Arise! their swords subdue

The wicked try to live this life

With hearts apart from You

But as for me, I shall behold

Your face in righteousness

Until awaking on that day

content with Christ’s likeness
